Ethan Hertweck, a marine veteran, was killed in Ukraine on December 8, just 11 days before he was scheduled to return home to the United States, according to Task & Purpose. Hertweck and one of his comrades were defending two bunkers when they were attacked by Russians. Both of them emerged from their post, eliminating about 12 enemy soldiers and stopping their advance, his mother said. They saved two bunkers full of their unit. Hertweck managed to reach the bunker, but he had to go back for his comrade and was then hit in the upper left part of his chest above the plate. Despite this, he tried to provide aid before he died. Hertweck, 21, died fighting in Avdiivka, in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, according to a fellow soldier. His mother stated that he gave his life for a country and the people he fell in love with. Avdiivka has been the site of intense fighting in recent weeks, as Russia continues its brutal assault in an attempt to capture the city, with little progress. Russia launched its major assault on Avdiivka in October, and since then, it has suffered significant losses in personnel and vehicles, according to Ukraine, Western intelligence services, and analysts. Hertweck served in the Marine Corps from November 2019 to June 2020 and left as a lance corporal, according to his service record. He was honorably discharged due to a rare blood condition, according to his mother and documents consulted by the publication. After the war began, he made multiple trips to Ukraine, first to help women and children on the Polish border, and later to obtain his combat medic license. He eventually signed a contract with the Ukrainian army and joined the 131st Reconnaissance Battalion as a medic for the Vidmak team. He then transferred to another unit with one of his comrades, with whom he carried out his final mission. At least 46 Americans have died in Ukraine since February 2022, many of them military veterans, according to Task & Purpose. Hertweck is one of 11 marine veterans believed to have been killed in Ukraine.
